Dark Flower/Light Background

I shot this nearly black iris last week. I'd like some tips on shooting dark flowers. I tried to stay away from the darker greens around it, but the nearest lighter background was a brick walkway.

The Levels histogram shows blocked shadows and highlights. Still the HL are only caused by the white sidewalk so that's OK. When shooting a dark object the meter is going to see dark and try to open...

Barbara the histogram in PSP is in the adjust menu ie- Adjust >Brightness & Contrast > Levels
